Rural
Women’s Committee (CMR)
Directly support Nicaraguan women fighting - and winning
- against gender violence in a society in which 30% of women have
been abused by a partner
This Nicaraguan NGO shows how small-scale, community-based projects
can lead to big-scale social change.
1. Local rural women are trained to become “community
defenders”
against domestic violence able to identify, report and take action
on cases.
2. Those women then train other women in other
communities to do the same.
3. Step 2 is repeated until, from one small, local
revolution, a grass-roots
network of trained women with a strong voice and identity is now
being formed.
With CMR’s project women don’t stay victims but become
the active agents of long-term change in their society.
